I read the Publisher Weekly review when this book came out and thought another book whipped up to meet a deadline, no thank you! I was greatly mistaken! After just reading the other two books in the series I took the plunge and was not disappointed. This is a wonderful book from Catherine Palmer, very much up to her usual high standard. My only complaint with the book was with Ivy's parents, the believers, who kept trying to marry her off to scoundrels to ensure their future. That was only slightly addressed, while I wouldn't change that aspect of the book necessarily I would have liked it to have been more of an issue dealt with. (those dangling prepositions!)

English Ivy English Ivy Series #1 HeartQuest Catherine Palmer 9781414313504 Books Reviews

This story tells of the journey of finding God's will. It is an acurate description of the roller coaster ride on the way to what we seek. This is a heart wrenching, yet beautiful, love story of man and woman, as well as "man" and God. In seeking love, "man" feels the frustration and rewards of seeking God. Obviously, God wants us to seek His will and wants us to know it... in His timimg. The question also arises, "Does His will change along the way?" In the Old Testament, Abraham is called to sacrifice his son. Like the Old Testament story, perhaps the ending is based on our hearts toward God. The author shows her versatility by choosing words that reflect the time and setting, yet still presents ease of understanding. A great read!
English Ivy, written by Catherine Palmer, is the journey of a twenty-one year old girl who discovers that the life that she has lived her whole life is not who she really is. She discovers that the family that she has had for her whole life is not her real family, but rather they are her uncle, aunt, and cousins. Her true mother and father died when she was only four years old in India. She now realizes that she is in quite a plight. Her uncle, for monetary reasons, arranged a fiancé for you, but her true father betrothed her to a different man. Both of these men are alive and want to marry her. Meanwhile, to the utter surprise of Ivy, another man comes and steals her heart. Through loopholes, danger, and disclosed secrets, Ivy is able to break the shackles of her two fiancés and is able to give her heart to the one man that she believes is worthy of it.

Catherine Palmer was able to make an exciting, heartwarming story of a woman who was able to realize her strength and stand up for her own life. Palmer was able to attach the emotions of the reader to the characters. Different levels of feelings emerge with the presence of the different fiancés of Ivy. Anger, disappointment, and a great desire to yell at Ivy come with the simple mention of their names. Palmer skillfully illustrated the growth of Ivy by the growth of the ivy vine that weaved its way throughout the story. It's a story that refuses to be put down.

The story itself is very predictable. From the first few chapters, it's quite obvious how the story will end. You realize very quickly who Ivy will marry in the end. Many characters in this story are developed and explored, while a few characters (i.e. her aunt) are hardly ever mentioned.
"English Ivy" is a historical romance set in 1815 England. The romance was a "sweet" romance, and the story mainly focused on the romance. Historical details were woven into the story, but there weren't a great deal of them--mostly setting, but some speech, manners, and clothing. The characters were engaging, and the main characters were earnest and wanted to do what was right.

It was obvious how the story would end, but Ivy was so innocent and willing to sacrifice for the good of others that I wasn't sure how we'd get to that ending. The suspense was created by seeing how the legalities of the marriage tangle would turn out.

The main characters were Christians who wanted to do God's will and so struggled with figuring out what God's will was. I agreed with the conclusion they came to. The characters searched the Bible for answers, and some Bible verses were quoted during their study.

There was a very minor amount of British mild bad language. There was no sex (though past unmarried sex was implied for several of the men). Overall, I would recommend this novel as enjoyable, clean reading.
This was also a great series. Catherine Palmer is a great author - read all of her books. She is worthy of the awards she has attained.
Excellent writing andending to a good story
Read and re-read. Gave this to another mature reader... who also read and re-read.
This is the best book of the English Ivy Series... my opinion. )
This was an enjoyable book to read-- characters were fun and varied. The plot was interesting and unique. I won't go into details as other reviewers seem to have all the bases covered. I just wanted to point out to those who like to read a series in order (such as myself) that this is NOT the first book in the series. Read "Wild Heather" first... the back of the book has a sneak peek at her next book, "English Ivy." It does not spoil anything reading English Ivy first, but in Wild Heather, Ivy Bowden is cleary single and if you're like me, that will annoy you!!
